hi there!
my name's dutch and i'm a tbutch lesbian crocodile! when i'm not sunning my scales, playing with toys, or hearing casino lights calling me home, i like fooling with web design! this site is definitely far from perfect, but that's okay, so am i :-) you can learn more about me on my carrd or my about!

enjoy your stay, don't forget to sign my guestbook, leave me something on my strawpage, or hit up my chatbox in the bottom left corner if you're feeling friendly! i love making friends! if you like my writing (or just feel like making my day!), i have a ko-fi too! you can also add my button to your site (no hotlinking please!), and i'll add yours in return, just let me know! :-)
personal manifesto + why i'm here
i made a neocities in hopes of eventually, ideally, divorcing myself completely from social media while still giving myself an outlet to share my creative endeavors. i still have a lot to learn, my site isn't perfect and is an eternal work in progress; i use templates and copious amounts of tutorials, but i'm proud of my sense of self expression on here and i think it can only get better with time!

finding myself more and more disenchanted with fandom spaces on social media has made me seek to make my own space where i can share what i like with people who like it, and avoiding senseless and upsetting [shipping, headcanon, etc] discourses and arguments. i love analysis and i feel like fandom condemns people for challenging fanon and criticising a [piece of media's] objective flaws, instead of being aware of and/or discussing it. racism, trans/misogyny, and lgbtphobia (and the inetersection thereof) run rampant in even the most "progressive" spaces and i've been enjoying distancing myself from it all in favor of coding, reading, blabbing about my favorite fandom stuff, dreamwidth blogging and shrine building.

100 questions for webmasters
100 questions for webmasters by mouseling
1. Please introduce yourself.
my name's dutch, i'm a coding-novice crocodile that loves food, toy collecting, and my beautiful femme :-)!
2. How long have you been making websites?
i started this one in... i think around july of '23? maybe a little earlier? not super long, but i've dabbled in html 'web customization' on social media sites before that and wanted to do something More!
3. And what got you into the hobby?
my hatred of social media, my love for customization and making things my own, and wanting to express myself!
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
honestly any! i love seeing how people communicate their likes, desires, beliefs, and so on via web design! fandom, nonfiction, personal sites... i love them all!
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
i use templates, but i do have a vague concept of what i want in my mind before i seek out help/resources/etc to make it happen. with this one, i knew i wanted it to be dark-ish, sleazy and fun! and i think i accomplished that, even though it's always a work in progress, heh!
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
honestly any of my neoneighbors (check their site buttons on the right!) and of course, my girlfriend, who i love talking about our websites with and exchanging feedback and ideas together!
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
it's something that i love the process of from start to finish... it's what i do when i'm upset, stressed, excited, angry... it's something that always soothes me and feels productive and creative at the same time!
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
i want to learn so much more than my schedule/energy will allow at the moment! :'( but i'll get there eventually.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
i like uniformity, but too much of it bores me. i think it's a pretty even balance; i try keeping the "core" of my webiste visually the same, but my offshoot pages are where i deviate!
10. How confident are you with CSS?
probably like... a solid 6/10. i feel like i can understand it, but writing it "freely"/"organically" is where i always mess up/get overwhelmed!
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
i do now... heh! i always use <li> and <ul>!
2. What is your favourite HTML element?
<details>... hehe!
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
i always consult my concepts, swatches, images i want to use, etc to keep everything cohesive and consistent!
14. Do you know JavaScript?
not super confidently... :'(
15. How about PHP?
nope! #failure
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
yes! i've had the same aesthetic preferences for as long as i can remember, so it's easy to stay focused in that way. meshing them all together is sometimes a little tricky tohugh, depending on the medium!
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
i wish i could say both, but probably content...? idk. i started this because i hated the lack of customization other sites offered and i love expressing myself, so i guess it's a mixture of both, but since i'm still kind of shaky when it comes to making sites/pages, i guess i'm more confident in my ability to fill a page before i am coding it!
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
nope and nope. don't care really!
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
if that's what the person wants to do, go for it!
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
probably not. my code is the tf2 coconut jpeg of the neocities universe...
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
i love them! i love adding my mutuals buttons to my site to encourage others to visit and enjoy their sites just as i do! :-)
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
i adore them... i love little bite-sized means of self expression! it's like looking at people's pinback buttons on their bags!
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
probably similar. i started this site with a loose vision of what i wanted and i think i'm accomplishing that!
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
i always wish i could be doing more, and doing it better! but i don't take that out on other people's abilities, either. they worked at their sites just as hard as i work on mine, so i prefer to say i Admire rather than Envy! but i'm only human, so sometimes i do see things and go WOW! i wish i had the know-how to pull something like that off! but all it does is make me want to work on my own site more!
25. What text editor do you use?
i just type things in here raw. idgaf!
26. Why do you use that one?
i'm a lazy sow!
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
i use squidge because that's also where i host stuff for coding on my dreamwidth blogs, so i like to just keep everything organized together!
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
i don't know enough to form an opinion, only that i hadn't known about nekoweb when i'd started on here and now i just don't really care to switch unless there's some big reason to!
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
like Jack Shit probably LOL idk!
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
i do! i have text document files of all of my pages, old and new, and i keep screenshots of them to see how far my site has come! :-)
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
i like a healthy mix of both. i looove when people really let loose and go all over the place with their site visuals, but i also hate strobing lights and impossible-to-navigate sites (it's my loss, which bums me out!).
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
on purpose! i make a color palette for my site and then stick to it religiously! i like cohesion like that!
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
no because i hate social media and this is one of my favorite "self soothing" techniques/outlets! i'll never be a pro at it, or even decent, but i'll never give it up!
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I'D LOVE SOME MORE!! i'm always so shy on neocities, but i've been trying to come out of my shell and comment on people's profiles! ;_; i mostly just talk to my girlfriend about it and then beg my social media friends to make sites of their own here! LOL
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
Hell No!
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
i try to! at least once a month, but usually more than that!
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
LOL i try not to but i Do just get bored of my layouts now and then and seek to mix it up again! but my site's "vibe" stays the same more or less, i'd say.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
mostly the former two! i like talking about my hobbies, my thoughts on fandom, and i love using this as a means of organizing links to books/tv/movies/etc that i want to eventually (or have!) enjoy! i love Organizing it the most!
39. Do you do web design professionally?
god no!
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
no, because i think it would kill my love for it. as for what i Do do, i prefer to keep that private, thank you!
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
all the time!
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
unfortunately yes. but i have no nostalgic or emotional attachment to it other than that it's the only way for my writing to be seen + my friends are on there! :'(
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
discord, but i'm really picky about who i add and what severs i join.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
sometimes, but it's usually something mellow like oldies or videogame instrumentals. typically when i'm being Creative i have to have Total Silence, but this is a hobby that i can enjoy some ambience in the backgound with!
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
i have this one website, but several dreamwidth accounts where i do more "in depth blogging" on!
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
nope, smorgasboard of crap. All Of My Interests.... attack!!!!!
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
LOL i try to be as authentic as possible, but i'm also a private person so i guess i'm a little guarded? but i wouldn't say it's a Persona! also i really Am a crocodile, so don't go getting any ideas about me being some kind of human being! ha!
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
yes! people here are so kind, it's such a nice change of pace from how hostile social media can be. limovars, if you see this, i miss you! :'(
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
happy enough. does what i need it to do once i figure out what i'm trying to get it to do!
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
don't get too wrapped up in what other/more experienced people's sites look like... it'll make you want to quit! just take things are your own pace, let your site grow with you! it's so fun that way!
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
be kind and have fun! LOL idk!
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
my code organization would probably make an Actual Coder want to kill themselves with how bad it is LOL but it's mine and i like it! :-)
53. Do you consider different browsers?
no... i used to, but i was just making myself crazy with trying to get everything to look Just Right and it made it No Fun for me so... nope! not anymore!
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
firefox and No LOL. i don't even know that firefox is that great tbh! if anyone has a better rec, tell me!
55. And what OS are you on?
ios typically, but i'm also on windows!
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
nope, just happen to use it.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
i Try to make them so, but ultimately they aren't really, no. sorry!
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
i hate it. HATE IT! please STOP scaring me!
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
i think they're super cool! i'd love to join some but i'm too shy/ don't really know how to go about it... ;__; maybe someday!
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
YES!! and i want to make SO many more! ;u; they are such a great expression of love for something and can be entirely unique to what the person wants! i like seeing what people choose to emphasize or talk about in their shrines, so i don't think there should be any kind of rigid guide or rules to follow tbh!
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
idk, probably? oh well!
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
honestly i don't even really know. i just do things as they come to me and change it when i want, and enjoy the transformation and the progress i make!
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
i guess i am but i feel like i don't have what it takes to be "considered as one" (my own internal hangup, not anything i put on anyone else!).... i edit modded screenshots i take myself within videogames, take my own photos of my collections and know my way around a photoshop clone pretty well and use stock images to make some of my own asssets/do a Little Tiny bit of drawing sometimes, but i guess i'm just too hard on myself to consider myself an artist... ;__; but i guess i do, yes! i also commission artists for art of the things i love that i use on my sites!
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
too many to name, but i have a huge list over on my credits and resources page!
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
not making my code look like disorganized shit despite the Gorgeous templates i use LOL. sincerely so sorry to muck up your beautiful designs with my coconut jpeg website!
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
take your time, getting overwhelmed is easy and understandable! don't be afraid to ask webmasters for help, where to find stuff, etc! i've found "gatekeeping" doesn't really exist over here as much as it does on social media; people tend to link/source their codes, backgrounds, tutorials, etc and encourage others to do the same! always give credit where it's due and let your site grow With you!
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
my code is a Mess please don't look.... SKDFKSDF
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
i think they're cool!
69. How about table-based layouts?
ditto as above!
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
sure! i'm currently using lots of three column layouts heh... i think it's fun!
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
the html for sure!
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
yeah! but i still prefer to use both :-)
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
LOL i always make an excuse to make a new page if i have a layout i want to use but nothing to currently use it with! i'll FIND something to put on it!
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
perpetually a beginner LOL. but that's okay! i like to have fun :-)
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
only if i'm curious about how they did a certain element or something like that!
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
lots of tutorials.,.,., lots of googling quesitons.,, lots of time invested.., but i don't regret it!
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
yeah i feel like i often find the stupidest way possible to do something that's really simple so Yes!
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
i love them and i use them all the time!
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
i like percentages, since i can trust that they stay In Scale no matter what i do around them, but i also use px if i want a specific height for a text box or something!
80. Do you have a favourite font?
NOOO THE IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION.... i can't say that i do, only that i love looking for them/at them and love the art of typography!!
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
if i did i would only do so with my girlfriend! otherwise, i don't have much interest in it!
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
i love looking at the neocities page and finding random websites hehe!
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
i mean i follow if i like it, and i look forward to seeing them on my neocities feed page! and i would literally be so honored if people even like... Percieved my website, let alone visited it repeatedly! ;_;
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
its contents and themeing! i work really hard on it so really any acknowledgement of it would make my day!!
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
not quite sure what this means but i collect vinyls, some cds and vhs's, and have a fun lil mp3 player on my birthday list so... eep!
86. How often and for how long are you online?
i hate typing/being on my phone (it hurts my hands!), so mostly in the evenings or during the day on my lunch/if things are slow at work.
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
lesbians, transsexuals, charlatans, heretics and anybody who's Fun tbh! i really enjoy critical discussion and picking apart the stuff i like, so as long as people are cool with that, we'll get on just fine heh.. i love making new friends! :-)
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
sure! i'm interested in how Everything works!
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
noooo that's WAY above my skill level sadly!
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
i have no idea what that is and i've never used one!
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
i used to but it just kept messing up and now i think it's too far along for it to really matter. i'm fine with the neocities "views" thing... i don't really care all that much!
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
i used to be on the pony forums a lot, but i haven't been on them in forever! i should get back into that!
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
usually just right here, but if it's longer pieces i prep it in a word doc first. i always keep "copies" of my webpages on word documents too!
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
idk i feel like a douchebag for thinking i'm cool or having any kind of pride or confidence in myself but i've been told i'm Cool and that people enjoy what i do (my site, my writing, etc) and it always makes me emotional when people take the time to compliment me or hang out with me... i always want to be someone who can be confided in, and who people trust and respect. i'm growing and learning more and more every day to become the best person i can!
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
i try desperately not to... i screenshot the way my site used to look from when i was first starting out, and with my writing, i tell myself i'm not allowed to Go Back And Edit Things To Death once i'm done writing it (as i'm writing is fine, but Nothing after the last sentence!); once i post it, i can't touch it anymore! and i try really hard not to delete old stuff even if it Does embarrass me or i don't feel it's good enough anymore, but i try to tell myself that it's something i made in the time and place i "needed" to make it and it, like me, is growing and improving all the time, so it's okay that it's not as good as my newer stuff! it was my Best Stuff at one point in time and that's good enough for me! :-)
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
honestly i'd appreciate it if people didn't archive my site, especially not without my permission! Yes a good thing about the web is that it's Permanent, but a good thing about it is Also that it doesn't Have to be. my site will be up for precisely as long as i want it to be and it will touch however many lives (from 0 to a billion!) it will during its time online and if i ever choose to delete it, then it'll be gone and that's My Will for My Site and i think that's just as beautiful as something that lasts forever!
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
idk, i'm a private person but there are some things i'm more comfortable talking about online than i ever will be irl, so i guess i discuss a lot of that here! and in my writing i express things that i Outwardly would only privately confide in friends about. i want to be approachable and i want to talk about myself, but i'm also ultimately a private person, so that's kind of a fine line for me i guess! if i don't want to talk about something, i'll be sure to say so!
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
Of Course my beautiful girlfriend, bee, who you can check out here! i also want to shout out my friend cc, who you can check out right here! i also encourage you to check out the buttons on the right for the sites of my amazing and talented mutuals!
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
i try to!
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
aww it wasn't so bad! i love answering billions of little questions, it's so fun for me! i really enjoyed this! :-)
