"The right to be a god... You?"

Dr. Albert Wesker (c.1960-2009) was an accomplished virologist notorious for his work with groups affiliated with the bio-weapons black market. Originally one of the test subjects in Project W who went on to specialize in biotechnology and bioengineering, Wesker was an elite perfectionist individual of absolute coldness, always wearing deep-black sunglasses that gave him an even more unapproachable air. As a senior researcher linked to the t-Virus Project as early as 1978, he bore witness to, and at times shaped, Umbrella's B.O.W. research. He officially left the company soon after a stall in the Tyrant Project and began work as a spy, leading to a career in the United States Army and eventually with S.T.A.R.S. as its Captain.

Wesker ultimately chose to betray Umbrella and work with other groups to steal its research data, benefiting from a mutation brought on by a prototype virus that gave him superhuman powers. This made him, in his self-assertion, believe that he was chosen to achieve the ultimate goal of causing the mass extinction of humanity in favor of evolution. He was killed in March 2009 during a BSAA operation which uncovered his role in a doomsday project dubbed Uroboros.

THE SERPENT, Lucifer, Lilith, the all-knowing, greatness-destined, trounced by fate, betrayal and egotism... the purveyor of wisdom and all of its deadliness. Albert is constantly working from the shadows since we meet him, and only becomes more powerful with the more knowledge and connections he amasses throughout the franchise! The shedding of the skin, of repeated rebirth as something new, bearing more and more grudges with each reincarnation. Mortal, machine, God... there is no price he won't pay for power!

THE WOLF, harbinger of deceit, ruthless hunters and strong leaders; these qualities were literally bred into Albert from a young age, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like to lean into them! He's cunning, cruel, and won't hesitate to do what it takes to get what he wants. Saddler dubs Wesker the Heretic Wolf, a fitting moniker for the one with such dark ambition! But even the fearsome wolf is still a dog, unknowingly bred for a purpose, to serve a master... A dog with a long leash is still a leashed dog!

THE GOD, a mantle that he is quick to claim once he learns the truth from Spencer. While godhood isn't something he literally ascended to, he participated quite a bit in the... sculpting of the world of Resident Evil; giving power to those who would [knowingly or unknowing] serve his own whims, providing some with only a glimpse into everything he knows, the list goes on! This is not necessarily praise, but a fact of his nature. He is flawed and volatile, fond of "ritual" and chaos alike (as long as he is in control!) and possesses power and intellect beyond any mortal. Divinity certainly comes with its share of burdens... while he triumphs like a god, he falls like one, too!

I enjoy likening some aspects of his character to Dionysus, as his desire for transformation of the self and escapsim from that which holds him back is similar to the nature of the god! Madness [can be used as an allegory for viral infections that turn characters into BOWs] follows Wesker wherever he goes, but so too do fervent followers [whether they believe in him, his lies, and/or so on or not], eager to share in that madness, in hopes of reaching some kind of higher clarity or understanding.

These are just my personal opinions and by no means extensive! For deeper analysis, check out my Weskennedy/Wesaeon dreamwidth!
• He's not much of a sweet tooth, but loves salty and bitter food. Wesker's favorite quick meal is a lox bagel with capers! He loves seafood!
• Albert is an aquarius; intellectual, forward, and independent, adaptable but not flexible... I think this star sign is a perfect match for him!
• Wesker is a vers, but not a switch; he bottoms, but he doesn't like to be a true submissive!
• He enjoys Architectural Digest and loves watching old movies and documentaries.
• Loves working with his hands... he might be behind the scenes now, but he doesn't mind doing things himself if necessary!
• Very particular about just about everything. He has very high standards in all aspects of his life!
• Is painfully self-aware; "performs" constantly, even if nobody is around. Often ponders the relationship between his identity and ego.
• Becuase of the virus(es) inside of him, his body temperature runs hot! He prefers cold showers and colder climates, but definitely enjoys a good sweat session via workout, sauna, or hot shower/bath!
• He doesn't smoke, but delights in sampling different kinds of wine. Does not drink to get drunk; he likes the flavor profiles and how it compliments the food he cooks!
• Cooking is an artistic science that he frequently indulges in. He's particular about his food, so he prefers to make things himself!
• Loves working with his hands... he might be behind the scenes now, but he doesn't mind doing things himself if necessary!
• Extremely adapable, but prefers routine over all else; he covets doing things his way, and isn't interested in explaining himself to anyone, no matter how mundane or regular the process is!
• While he's never not around technology of some kind, he prefers to write things down or handle notes physically. Always has a little notepad and pen on him, no matter what!
• Anything that proves a challenge for him immediately captures his attention; analysis, high-pressure scenarios, anything that exercises his brain is his bread and butter!
• Likes doing yoga, pilates and going on runs/walks for exercise. Doesn't bodybuild rigorously whatsoever... has more concealed muscle than anything, but he's physically strong, viral strength or not!
• Has a complex relationship with his body, pleasure, and autonomy.
• I think he enjoys playing (or would semi-regularly play) chess, billiards, tennis and golf; he prefers watching/studying football for the plays, stats and so on!
• The only person who has ever known him as authentically as one could, is Ada Wong.
• I ship him with Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Excella Gionne, and Jill Valentine. All throughout different times in his life - and with unique dynamics! For more on my shipping philosophy, click here!

albert has been with me for a very long time. spending my youth (and well into adulthood) watching his journey from prodigal son, to great betrayer, to mastermind, to fallen god marks some of the greatest times of my life. i envied his infinite ability to reinvent himself, to break free from the holds of people who sought to use you. i felt trapped and powerless in my own body and wanted nothing more than to rid myself of that feeling, to become a better version of myself, and take my own destiny into my own hands.

when we learned the truth about his past, about how he wasn't ever really in control of himself, that he'd just been doing exactly what he'd been bred to do, it destroyed me. his lost expression in the flashback scenes with spencer and his tangible melancholy as he recalls them make me ache. he'd been having bouts of paranoia, manic depression and obsessive tendencies, things i can relate to all too well. he was a victim that then perpetuated that same cycle, instead of breaking free from it. he had everything he needed to not become what spencer wanted him to, and he became it anyway. that's my worst fear, to have been abused and continue the cycle.

growing up in an environment that all too closely mirrored the principles of some of resident evil's greatest villains, i had such high hopes for albert - not that i thought he'd magically become some extreme humanitarian, but that he would at least do things for the sake of his own beliefs... unfotunately [but in line with the intent of his character], he dies parroting the exact same drivel that he was brought up into. that serves as a reminder to me of what i never want to be. i am not the people who raised me, i have strength, capability and power of my own... and i will use it to do things my way!

reading his files and learning that he always had anxiety, that he had a looming sense of dread coming over him at any given time, and managed to hold himself together so well... that's a skill i want so badly. wesker's own crisis of identity ("Are you saying I was manufactured?") was relatable to me as a young....... person (lol) who was struggling ith my own identity, who felt frequently like a monster... without all of the cool powers albert got to have! but i know all too wel what it's like to be at the beck and call of people who, once you come into your own strength and identity, are only as powerful as you give them permission to be.

i coveted his masculinity (not necessarily his male-ness; though i'm very aware that his Cis/Het/Whiteness is important to the symbolic significance of what he represents in the franchise); he's not extremely muscular, but alluring and strong. his body language exudes confidence, his well-fitting outfits and in no rush calmness about him was everything i sought to emulate as a [young, and now older] butch. of course, i watched the matrix and james bond movies and wanted nothing more than sharp tailored suits, slicked-back hair, and a sleek pair of sunglasses... with a transatlantic accent, of course. i wasn't allowed to cut my hair growing up, but i would buy cheap "men's" sunglasses and slick my hair back in the bathroom and daydream about having short hair and perfecting my icy, uninterested stare... ha! looking back on it, it should have been way more obvious that he was very "gender" to me; not a man's man, with lots of ruminations on his identity, becoming "something greater" (something that i would personally see as a transgender allegory in my own journey with my sense of self + body) and breaking free from a loathesome master.

i don't want to get too personal (it's taken a lot to even admit all this!), but there are other things [both headcanon and canon fact and the mixing of both] that i relate to in relation to the body, being manipulated, used and cast aside/denounced... well maybe that's enough for now!

One of my favorite things about Albert is his eyes... I think his eyes (and hands) are truly windows to his soul, hehe! I have a deeper analysis of Wesker and his sunglasses cooking that I'll be posting on my Weskennedy dreamwidth once it's completed! But for now, I really love just how much emotion is conveyed through the lighting and angles in which his eyes are on display! In Resident Evil 5 we see him seeming quite unlike himself, questioning his right to godhood... it's a really interesting contrast from the Wesker characterization we'd gotten thus far in the series!

I was surprised to find out that a lot of people didn't like his characterization in 5; the source of his infinite power turning on him and eating him alive from the inside, his complicated hatred of Spencer (whose legacy he ironically goes on to "honor" by following his plans pretty closely - something I hope a remake might slightly change to give him his own motivations), the price of godhood and what power really is to him... I just think it's so fun and interesting. I do think it's funny that people act like Wesker was at some kind of insanely villianous new low here, as if he wasn't experimenting on Lisa Trevor in 0/1... he was never a good person! Like... not even for a minute!
